Have a Matcha Parfait at Gion Kinana

When in Kyoto, Have a Matcha….

Beside being famous for its temples, traditional machiyas or houses, beautiful handmade items; Kyoto is also famous for its matcha.

Dessert shops mostly can be found around Gion and Kiyomizu-dera area; if you happen to be around these area; do drop by to any of the matcha shops which mostly offer good dessert.

Some places are more popular than others as they have stood by years and have loyal local patrons; one of the example here is Gion Kinana.

Located in one quiet alley, I thought there was no queue at this tea break time which made me quite happy but once you slide open the entrance. You would see the line inside which shaped as an S letter..

Waited around 15 – 20 mins; but as you go to any Japanese restaurants, the staff has excellent coordination. Informing one on the upstairs on how many patrons that going up and getting feedback on which tables are available. You just don’t find this kind of efficiency in other countries. Little inconvenience as possible to the Customers.

The matcha ice cream was smooth, creamy and overall parfait per glass was more than what you called a dessert. It was like half meal on your late noon. All the components of the parfait was perfectly balance when you scoop out the mixture. The sourness of berries was compensated by the ice cream; equally same for the matcha; this version was not bitter yet when you were eating the sweet part, it gave you the balance.

Overall a good experience but I felt it is a bit tricky to find this shop..

I am looking forward to visit other Matcha Dessert Shops which located on Gion main road or other easier to find place.
